In an effort to align our assessment system with the Washington State Essential Learnings and their coordinating benchmarks, the students are asked to strive to reach and maintain a higher level of academic competency. This means that every student should be able to demonstrate an 80% mastery grade average or above. Any grade that falls below 80% accuracy will require additional work on the part of the student to illustrate full comprehension.
In our classroom there will be two formats for grading:
1. Straight Percentage Grading: Straight percentage grades are used for most assignments that have a larger number of specific questions.
| A = 90% - 100% | Excellent. Student clearly demonstrates knowledge of subject matter. |
| B = 80% - 89% | Very solid work. Meets requirements easily. Student understands almost all concepts and details. |
| C = 70% - 79% | Student demonstrates understanding of most concepts and details from the curriculum. |
| D = 60% - 69% | Student lacks understanding of some of the major concepts and details or provides supporting data to demonstrate only partial understanding of major concepts. |
| F = 0% - 59% | Student lacks understanding of many of the basic concepts and details of the curriculum or does not provide supporting data to communicate knowledge of such concepts. |
2. Point Grading: Point grading is a system that consists of four numerical values. I use this system to grade all assignments that lend themselves to a more subjective scale. These numbers represent the following values.
| 4 = | Excellent quality. Above the standard. |
| 3 = | Standard met. |
| 2 = | Somewhat below standard. Partial understanding. |
| 1 = | Significantly below standard. |
