Dear students and families,

Summer’s here: time for strawberries, mosquito bites and campouts. When vacation ends, you will be in third grade, and I am your teacher. Yeah!

I have been a teacher for twenty-five years, in kindergarten, second, sixth, eighth grade and as an elementary teacher-librarian. You are my-first ever third grade class!

What will our classroom be like? I think about that a lot. I promise it will be a safe, friendly, respectful place to grow and learn. Mrs. Skay’s third grade will be our next-door neighbors. We will enjoy their company and share experiences like neighbors do.

Each student will have a desk as home base. We will clean our desks weekly and keep a notebook to organize assignments. Being organized saves time, shows respect for materials and gives us more time to learn and have fun.

There will be plenty of reading material in our class, fiction and nonfiction. We will make time daily to “drop everything and read.” I will do regular read alouds of favorite stories. I want to run centers at least two days a week to develop skills that vary by learning target. We will have over 90 minutes dedicated to reading and writing everyday, in addition to the activities above. Math instruction will run 50 to 60 minutes per day. Additionally, we will have social studies and science twice weekly and P.E, music and art instruction from specialists.

Families will learn more about our studies at Curriculum Night, in September. Look for the date in upcoming notes.

Tuesday, August 31st, at 4:30 the staff and PTA will host a back-to school Parade in Conway followed by Open House at the school. Make sure to come and get acquainted.

Keep reading this summer. Adults, make time to read to your child, as well. Hearing an adult read a favorite book is a treasured memory you can create.

The third grade supply list went home in June with the kids. It is posted on the Conway website: www.Conway.k12.wa.us. Send supplies to school the first day, September 1st.

Thank you for your interest and support. It is priceless.

Sincerely,

Nancy Hinton
